It was a beautiful fall day when I thought of the idea for JigSkinz. I was on the water in my 25 foot Contender, vessel name STONER (I'm in the rock business). My good friend and local tackle shop owner Josh Boyles and his brother in law Zack Zanzig were onboard with me. We had a half day trip to one of the artificial reefs off of Hilton Head Island in mind. Our target was the breeder sized redfish that move offshore to spawn in the fall and winter. I remember the day so well because there were thousands of man-o-war jellyfish floating around in the unusually blue water for that time of year. We spotted a Right whale on our way out as well. The fish gods smiled on us and we found the fish in good supply.
As we bounced our jigs on the wreck below the new lures would come back up chipped and dinged. This was of course not a surprise as we had done this many times before. It was just the way it was. You'd get a few trips out of a lure and then it would be relegated to the shelf in the garage. Maybe it would see daylight again when you had friends on the boat that you didn't want to ruin your good stuff. I wished I could "refinish" my lures. I'd seen some guys online do it before. They buy a little spray box and compressor then sand, paint and finish. It is a few day process and I am NOT an artist, I promise you that. I just didn't have the skill or patience for that.
So there it was, the problem. I just needed a solution. Something flexible, shrinkable, paintable, inexpensive and appealing to a wide range of fishermen. Oh, and the sizes, only about a billion different lures out there. Not an easy list to fill. The next day I filed for a "provisional patent" for the idea in my head. I still didn't know if it was possible but I was going to try. After a number of material changes and numerous sizing and product runs I have a product that I'm proud of. The first generation of JigSkinz will save fishermen money and tackle. I can't wait to hear the feedback and move on to the future plans of Jigkinz.
